Facebook and MySpace taking the fun out of dating

It used to take a couple of dates or more to find out about a person, what they like and dislike, their favorite movies, quotes, and special causes. There are some online matchmaking sites that have a taken a bit of the fun out of dating, but social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace have completely killed the fun of getting to know someone.

online dating

Pangborn of the Dave Matthews Band says, "Facebook and MySpace are kind of robbing the mysteries out of dating. You find out all these little things about people that you might otherwise let go. If I see someone's favorite quote is a Dave Matthews lyric or favorite band is Jimmy Buffet, I automatically have an image of them. And it kind of lingers."

Experts however, do not think that this is such a big problem. We are not actually seeking people exactly like ourselves, but we do find partners that are more suited to us through the use of these social networking sites.

Les Parrot a psychologist and family therapist says, "We know from research that opposites don't really attract. The truth is we're drawn to people that are like us, and the more we have in common — especially on matters that mean the most to us — the easier time we're going to have."

So maybe it is a good idea after all to have a look at your next date's site on Facebook or MySpace!

Are you dating - make it official online

od-logo-beta.jpg

If you are so happy with your relationship and the other person, here's a way you can make a statement - go public! OfficiallyDating.com is a new dating site which allows couples to go public with their relationship - a kind of a relationship press release service if you will.

The service focuses on the simple ability for couples to share their commitment to each other with the public, and socialize with other couples who share the same beliefs. I guess that's another way to connect people. The concept behind the service is the fact that humans have always been keen on marking their relationships and love using cave drawings (in the earliest ages), bench and tree bark etchings in the 20th century, and even graffiti in the 80's and 90's, so if was only natural to evolve this into something more contemporary using the Internet.

Another dimension of this concept is that members don't necessarily have to be couples, but singles as well. Singles can check whether someone they are interested in is involved in a "serious" relationship. If that someone is in a relationship that has been announced as "the real deal", than odds are they are indeed "taken", and then singles know not to expect too much from trying to connect with them. Couples actually choose to rate their relationship during sign-up with the following criteria: Dating, Engaged, Married, Exclusive, Semi-exclusive, Casual fling, Broken-up, It's complicated. So, other than Engaged, Married, Exclusive, all the others give a hint of hope that someone you found interesting is approachable.
