Tips for maintaining a relationship with someone in the military

Lavalife, a dating site, has offered new tips for keeping a relationship strong if you are dating someone from the military.

relationship with someone in the militaryOne very important thing is to maintain trust. No matter how far away your partner is you need to give them your full trust to give strength to the relationship.

Communication lines need to be kept open. You need to try and communicate in whatever way possible. E-mailing is not enough, you need to try and phone as much as possible. Hearing the voice of your loved one can give you more of a feeling of closeness.

Value the time that you do get to spend together. Most military personnel do get a lot of free time when they are home in times of peace. You should make the best of these times.

Most importantly, you should take care of yourself - your partner will be much more relaxed if they know that you are doing well.

A solid network of friends and family can help you through the tough times. Mikki Glass, who is dating a first sergeant in the U.S. Army, says, "I am very close with the wives and girlfriends of the deployed soldiers from my boyfriends unit. While the men are gone, we all stay very close. We help each other. We support each other. And we take care of each other when one of us needs it."

Dating and gifts

Buying your partner a gift for Christmas can be quite stressful, especially if you have only been dating for a short time.

Dating and gifts

Relationship expert Whitney Casey says, "it's a huge determiner if you are in a relationship. You better not get it wrong because the recipient is thinking, 'This the kind of gift I'm going to be getting for the rest of my life.'"

If you have been together for less than a month a small gift under $25 is the best idea. Something, "small but significant to the conversation you have been having with the person." Pick something he mentioned like a book by his favorite author or a nice candle with his favorite scent.

If you are in a very casual relationship with someone (likely to break up) get something that doesn't last like cookies or chocolate.

If you are in a casual relationship that you hope will last, get them something that will help you two spend time together. Dancing lessons, cooking classes, or a weekend adventure are the best ideas.

However, most of us are completely lost, this is when you should do something funny. Patti Feinstein, dating coach, says, "Make it silly, lighthearted – it doesn't say anything except, 'I'm listening.'"

Dating is like closing a business deal

Dating is like closing a business dealFor many singles dating is not the first thing at the top of their list — many people are more focused on keeping their job and taking care of their family than making a good first impression on a date. Of course, this does not mean that they are not looking for that special someone.

Jim, a 42-year-old man has this exact problem, and it has worsened with the economic crisis, "I really like this one business-minded woman, but there was a big project that suddenly needed all of my attention at work. Once I finally put the fire out, suddenly a month had gone by and I never called her. When I finally did, all I got was an e-mail that said, 'Jim, I thought we had a great time together. However, you seem to be a little distracted and all over the place – a month of no contact is too distracted even for me.'"

Author Jess McCann says Jim and many other singles need to understand that dating is like making a sale. The timing and management of relationship building is very important. You cannot just wait for dates (customers) to just call you, you have to get out there and seek them out for yourself. Dating needs to become a priority in order to get the results that you want.

Lauren Conrad fighting dating abuse

Lauren is the star of the MTV series "The Hills," she is also a darling of the media and a favourite of the paparazzi.

Lauren ConradMany are hoping that she will still be appearing on MTV in 10 years. When asked about this Conrad simply said, "I hope not, I really hope not!"

Her MTV series "The Hills" is partly scripted and partly reality. She has become a household name for those between the ages of 13 and 35. The show will see its finale on the 22nd of December, and its future from there on out is rather cloudy. However, the girls from the show are finding other things to do. Whitney Port will have her own spinoff, "The City," which will follow her life in New York. Audrina Patridge has gotten a role in "Sorority Row," a horror film. Heidi Montag will probably go on taking care of her misfit boyfriend.

Conrad is doing many things like writing books and teaming up with Avon cosmetics to fight dating abuse and partner violence.

Conrad says: "It is a difficult age, and you don't have a lot of experience in dating, and you don't know what the norm is and what's acceptable. Dating abuse isn't something that's normally talked about. It has such a stigma to it." Lauren's best piece of advice to young girls is that they go out on first dates in a group or in public places.
