Online dating services vs social networks

social networks

This is the subject I've been thinking about for some time now. You see, with all the attention social networks are getting these days, one would think online dating services, especially those that require paid subscription, are set to die. But is that really the case? Few points I want to make:

  • First, unlike social network users, people that use dating services pretty much know what they want and what to expect from the service. Usually they don't want or have time to poke around and inform their followers what they had for dinner.
  • Second, it's a matter of scale, but in the other sense than you may think. When it comes to online dating, more doesn't necessarily mean better. As I just said, online dating service users want to meet and date someone new, rather than spend their free time online.
  • Last but not the least, those that are looking foe niche audience can always sign for some niche-targeting dating services, rather than browse around thousands of groups on the major social sites.

Now before I let you go, I need to point out I've nothing against social networks. On the contrary, they rock. Still, when it comes to meeting someone online for a romance or an affair, I still prefer specialized websites. At the end it's your call and I guess the best solution is to use both social networks alongside "traditional" dating services.

Any comments?

Singer Sheryl Crow dating movie producer Steve Bing?

Sheryl CrowNothing starts a new week like a good ol' gossip. Today we're bringing you the tidbit of information about the potential romance involving singer Sheryl Crow and Elizabeth Hurley's ex-boyfriend - movie producer Steve Bing.

After being introduced by mutual friend Jennifer Aniston last year, the pair is reportedly dating in secret. According to an unnamed source, "A few weeks ago things got a little more intimate between them. They are really bonding - they have more in common than anyone thought."

Crow has been single since splitting with long-term love, Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong in 2006. On the other hand, Beowulf-producing Bing is most famous for his relationship with Hurley, who is the mother of his four-year-old son Damian.

Secret to dating success for women

gb007comsleep.jpgActually, it's quite simple:

"Men want to sleep with you. That's it. Period."

According to British comedian Deborah Frances-White, that's all there is to it. Women simply need to understand (or accept) this, and start acting accordingly. She goes further by saying a woman can be desired by pretty much any man she wants, if only women didn't waste time thinking about things like "are my breasts to small" or "I have cellulite". Bottom line is that a man will find pretty much every woman he meets attractive at some level. The secret is not to obsess over things that are irrelevant and beyond control, but rather concentrate on the appropriate level.

An interesting article, so if you're single take five and read it. If you have comments, why not drop us a line or two?

Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson together again?

kate-hudson-owen-wilson-400a010807.jpgThe two met while making the movie "You, Me and Dupree" in 2006. They reportedly ended their relationship in June 2007. As of lately, Kate has been giving, what some have interpreted as signs, of getting back together with Owen. They've been seen together in numerous situations recently, for example having dinner together and spending time in Florida, earlier this month, according to SFGate.

The former couple have now offered what may be the strongest hint yet, about them getting back together, after having been spotted dining with friends, acting all cuddly and casual. Sounds like they are enjoying themselves. ;)

DegreeDate back in business

logo.jpgRemember DegreeDate.com? It was conceived as an education-oriented dating site, and was working until about two years ago. Well, it's back again in "beta v2.0".

The Seattle based service was initially launched back in 2004, as a niche dating service where educated men and women who view education as something desirable in their potential partners, could meet and date. It was taken down later on because it was hacked, according to Cully Perlman, Degreedate.com founder and president. Well, it's now back online, and continues to offer its services to mature singles, who know what they want, for free. Improvements include a new design, member homepage, new dating resources (articles, advice), better picture viewing modes, and maybe most important, regarding past trouble, all new security features.
