Microsoft patents face recognition search - good for dating?

miscrosoftdating1_29_02_08.jpg

Microsoft just registered a patent involving face recognition that could be used in the dating industry called "Image Based Face Search". The new patent makes it possible to compare an uploaded photo (from a mobile phone or PC) against millions of photos available in databases and try to find a match.

There at least a couple of ways this new patent could be used for dating applications - for example matching someone's profile on a dating service against a photo of someone that you happen to regard as attractive. Something similar already exists on a dating site whose name/address I cannot remember at the moment, but it's much more primitive, and is basically a hand edited matching algorithm. On the other hand, if you're a bit of an artist you could sketch the facial traits of someone you'd find beautiful and try to find matches in the real world. Also, if you happen to have seen someone whom you liked but didn't make contact, the patent could be used to try to match your description (graphical of course) against photos on dating services.

Group dating - the new approach to dating

This social networks thing really sparks a lot of new ideas doesn't it. The latest social networking inspired online dating project is Ignighter.com, a dating service started by a couple of college buddies (fresh out of college), who tried to introduce a new way to date, more in line with the new (younger) generation.

Basically, the authors - Dan and Adam, wanted a hybrid between Facebook and a classic online dating site. The idea was to create an environment that enables people to share contacts between different social groups but with a goal of creating an atmosphere of potential interaction between singles who are looking to meet other singles. They found classic online dating sites a bit antisocial (compared to sites like Facebook), so Ignighter was on its way to existence. I guess the following graphical representation of what the service provides tells it best:

I must say I like the idea. Personally, even though approaching a woman individually is a more direct (arguably more effective) way, I have always found it easier to meet a woman I liked in an informal social environment. Ignighter sounds interesting, so give it a try! BTW, they are present on Facebook as well.

Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe & Emma Watson dating?

Daniel Radcliffe & Emma WatsonDaniel Radcliffe spent Valentine's Day with his Harry Potter co-star Emma Watson.

Apparently, Daniel took Emma to west London's Imperial Arms pub where they spent the evening hugging and laughing. The "magic duo" arrived quite late (about 10pm) and sat outside the pub, using nothing but each other's bodies for warmth.

According to one source, "everyone thought it was amazing they had decided to spend Valentine's Day together - the most romantic day of the year. They looked like a love-struck couple who only seemed to have eyes for each other."

Hollywood star Sean Penn dating model Petra Nemcova?

Hollywood star Sean Penn dating model Petra Nemcova? You know the scenario. Someone sees two celebrities (male and female) at an occasion together and suddenly all the media is speculating they are in a relationship. Well, we're joining the fray. :)

After they've posed for photographs together at an Oscars after party, people started talking that Hollywood star Sean Penn is dating model Petra Nemcova.

The now single 47-year-old actor, who announced his separation from his wife of 11 years Robin Wright Penn two months ago, and the 28-year-old model attended the Elton John AIDS Foundation party last night.

Nemcova naturally denied everything, even adding they are just friends and Penn is on the advisory board of her charity. I can not restrain myself - what does he advise on hun'? ;)
